DAEGU

With the opening of the express rail (KTX Railway Express) in April 2004, we can enjoy the super high-speed train ride, operating at speeds of 300km per hour from Seoul to Daegu.
After completing the last itinerary in Seoul, the tour coach drop us at the KTX Seoul rail station for our continue journey to Daegu. For those who are carrying more than one luggage especially if they are heavy, let me warn you about the route to the train platform.
To reach the concourse of the railway station you need to walk up two flights of stepways each about ten steps. The worst that can happen is when it rains. You are right in the open, looking up the wide stairs groan and moan as you heive your heavy luggages. The concourse are very spacious with ticketing counters and food oulets. You may want to take a rest before proceeding to the check-in gate located about 25feet above the concourse. So get your luggages and make your climb up, but no worry beside the stairs there is an escalator, still a slight difficulty. The difficult journey does not end here, after the check-in gate, you have two more flights downward before reaching the train platform. I am not sure why or the reasons to create such a layout. So be ready to meet or encounter any unexpected circumstances where ever you go. Travelling light is still my policy.

Other than the ups and downs of climbing, the overall station looks neat and clean. The train still looks new and I had observed that the max speed reached was 305km/hr. We reach Daegu within the stipulated time schedule.

Daegu, a modern city with two subway lines running across the city but still rich in Korean traditional culture and historical treasures. The hotel that we stayed is located within the heart of the city. This Metropolitan City itself contains many interesting and unique landmark. If you are adventurest there is no limit to your venture, up to 100km radius, mostly hilly and country side. Let's take a look at the interesting places within the city vicinity.

There are several parks but the one you should not miss is the Duryu park. The Daegu Tourist Information Center, Kolon Outdoor Music Hall, Daegu Culture & Art Center and the famous Woobang Tower Land are located here. The Daegu Tower, 202m in height, can let you view the whole city at the top of the tower. Woobang Land around Daegu Tower is a comprehensive Theme Park with 31 types of play facilities. Subway line #2 and exit Duryu Station.

The Gyeongsang-gamyeong Park exposes the pavilions, monuments and relics. A more relax and resting place away from the bustling city yet is within the city itself. Within the Park are the Seonhwadang, Jingcheonggak, Gwanpungnu Pavilions and Hamabi, Birim Monuments. Subway line #1 and exit Jungangno Station.

Other historical sites are the Daegu Hyanggyo Confucian Acadamy (Subway line #1 exit Myeongkuk Station), Daegu National Museum (Bus Nos; 242, 349, 427, 449, 454, 514, 524, 814,929), Gukchae-bosang Memorial Park (Subway line #1 exit Jungangno Station) and Dalseong Park (Bus nos; 404-1, 407, 415, 427, 514, 808, 836, 939).

Large restaraunts with delicious cuisine lines on both sides of the street, that is Deurangil Street or more refer to as the Deurangil Eatery Town. The more famous type of food are the Dongin-dong Jjim-galbi, Ttaro-gukbap soup and Herbal cooking. If you like Korean food this is the place for you.

Like any other tours, "Shopping" is always included in the itinerary. So what do you have in Daegu? Well, you can find the market type of shopping areas as well as the multi storey shopping complex. To name a few to please your appetite for shopping!!!

The busiest street in the city is Dongseongno Street. It is packed with shops of sport goods, clothings, restaraunts, cafes and bars. Large bookstores, theaters, beauty parlours and fashionable clothings as well as cultural facilities are located here. Subway line #1 exit Jungangno Station.

The oldest traditional market is the Seomun Market. The market is divided into six districts with 10 shopping malls and over 4,000 shops all within the same vicinity. Seomun Market specialties are the fabrics, textiles, linen and cotton together with agricultural products and fish to manufactured goods. Subway line #2 exit Seomun Market Station / Bus nos; 404, 504, 514, 601, 603, 616, 808, 836, 840, 910.

Right in the heart of the city is Debec Plaza, a 12 storeys departmental store. Both imported items and special local products can be found here. There are periodic bargain sales and are popular among the locals as well as the tourists if you happen to be there at that period. Bus nos; 204, 303, 402, 427, 524, 549, 646, 704, 929.

Another two grand shopping centers are the Dong-A shopping center (Subway exit Banwoldang Station) and the Lotte Department Store (Subway line #1 exit Daegu Station).

We stayed only for one night in Daegu, but for those who has more time may consider staying longer if you plan of coming to South Korea. The next city is Busan where we travel by tour coach.
