The Great Singapore Sales
Many visitors are requesting for information about Singapore shopping and the great Singapore Sales. In order to provide the latest informations I make a three days trip to Singapore Island at the end of June 2004. I could not get any pictures due to heavy haze hanging over the island but I had gathered the latest informations from around town and the tourism board about the great Singapore shopping Sales.

A must visit country if you are vacationing around this region. This virtual tour continues for the insight of The Great Singapore sales and Shopping in Singapore.
Shopping for what you may have miss out in Thailand and Malaysia, you can still find lots of shopping mall venues for your last minute shopping in Singapore.

The Great Singapore Sales is held yearly between May and July. As a visitor to Singapore, there's no better time to shop than during this great sales. Enjoy the ultimate shopping experience and indulge in irresistible bargains and great buys. Another plus is the over 3,000 affiliated retailers which you can shop tax free. Shop where you see the Refund Tax Free shopping sign. A 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST) is levied on most goods and services. However, if more than SGD100 was spent with Premier Tax Free ($300 with Global Refund) , visitors can apply for a refund of the GST paid. Read more about GST refund.

Shopping is second to eating as a national pastime in Singapore. The island has an outstanding range of products that are available in shopping malls, department stores, boutiques, and bargain stores. Bargain for all you're worth at the street markets and small shops selling tourist wares. Prices are fixed of course, in the department stores and boutiques.

Singapore was once a bargain-hunters paradise, particularly for electronic goods and there are still bargains to be found but the hunt may take a little longer! Markets selling traditional clothes, souvenirs, crafts and local foodstuff can be found in the conservation areas of Chinatown, Little India and Mosque Street. Another popular market is at Bugis Junction, which offers everything from fake designer gear, tacky souvenirs to ethnic carvings.

Most antiques stores have a variety of small items -- porcelain, brassware, idols, and so on -- as well as Chinese furniture, which may be of blackwood inlaid with mother of pearl, or red-stained wood with elaborate carvings picked out in gold. Falling halfway between souvenir shops and antiques stores, curio shops sell a fascinating variety of goods, mainly from China.

If you're a shopaholic, you may want to time your visit to Singapore to coincide with the mid-year Great Singapore Sale, when it seems that the whole island is going at a discount. All major shopping centres and boutiques mark down their prices during this period, which can last for up to a month.

You can start your shopping excursion along Orchard Road. Take your time walking along the tree-lined boulevard. With air-conditioned underpasses and covered walkways linking most of the shopping complexes and department stores offering a diverse range of products and brands, your shopping experience will be comfortable and convenient one. For more shopping in the city, take a ride to City Hall MRT station to shop at Marina Bay, the lifestyle shopping belt where shopping is complemented by the arts at the Esplanade - Theatres on the bay. Looking for electronic goods, take a turn to Sim Lim Square located at No.1 Rochor Canal Road. Here you can find the largest Computer & Electronics Centre in Singapore.

You may also like to venture into the Singapore heartlands, where prices can be comparatively cheaper. Suburban towns like Toa Payoh, Holland Village, Woodland and Tampines are only a MRT ride away. So if you're feeling adventurous, follow the off-the-beaten-track shopping trail and mingle with Singapore families as they go about their daily business.

Some of the larger shopping malls or department stores will exchange goods or possibly refund the price of goods if they are returned undamaged within a specified number of days from the purchase date with the receipt or cash slips. On the other hand, smaller shops may not be so accommodating. It is advisable to check the shop's return policy before making a purchase.

When you're tired with going from shop to shop, there's always a cosy cafe somewhere where you can take a break and have a relaxing cuppa. Starbucks, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and Spinelli have all made their way here, or if you prefer a homegrown cafe there's always Delifrance, The Coffee Club or Prima Deli. There are even malls with shops that offer foot reflexology massages to soothe your poor aching feet - and prime them up for more street-pounding!
