Singapore Famous Tasty Food
Singapore has it's own stlye and taste for food. No doubt some of the names are common among some of south east asia countries, but the taste is different. When you do visit this island, do not miss some of Singapore famous food.
A must visit country if you are vacationing around this region. This virtual tour continues for the insight of Singapore famous food.

SINGAPORE FOOD FESTIVAL

Yes, let your tongue and tastebuds do the tasting with all the unique Singapore delights. The Singapore Food Festival is a month long culinary celebrations in July each year. So plan your stay to coincide with this great festival of food.

Singapore is known as food lovers' heaven, and deservedly so. Its various cultural influences and a readiness to take on the latest gastronomic trends make for a unique blend of top-notch restaurants, cosy cafes and local-style hawker stalls and kopi tiams (coffee shops).

Singaporeans love eating, you could literally comb the streets for good restaurants; there are so many everywhere and they are easily accessible.

Eating would appear to be the national pastime in Singapore! Restaurants abound and the choice appears to be limitless wherever you are, whatever your budget and whatever your taste. Restaurants, bars and general entertainment areas are dotted all over the city.

Hawker Stalls and Food Courts offer a host of cheap, Chinese dishes include Char Kuey Teow (fried noodles), Popiah (fresh spring rolls) and Chicken Rice while Malay dishes include Nasi Lemak (fragrant rice in coconut milk) and Satay (skewered meat broiled over red-hot coals and dipped in peanut sauce). Many of the hawker stalls have been converted to food courts and moved to air-conditioned buildings.

The one local dish that is still as famous as it was twenty years ago when I first visited the island is the Hainanese Chicken rice. When I revisited the island in June 2004, I tried the dish at one of the hawker stall, and yes they are still the best chicken rice around.
Other local favourites which you can try are:
  1. Bak Kut Teh
A tasty soup created from pork ribs boil with five spices, garlic and pepper. Serve with rice and/or u char koay (fried dough).

  2. Murtabak
A pizza liked indian style, stuffed with minced chicken or mutton, onion and egg and served with curry.

  3. Hokkien prawn mee
Vermicelli and noodles fried with prawns, sliced chicken, cuttledfish and pork.

  4. Curry fish head
Large fish head cooked in curry with vegetables added and serve with rice.

  5. Chilli / Black Pepper Crab
A great dish of Singapore, love by both local and tourist alike. hard shell crabs cooked in thick gravy with tomato, chilli paste and grinded peanut. The more spicy black pepper crab are cooked with freshly-ground black and white pepper, salt and garlic. Both are best eaten with cube of french bread or chinese buns. Of course you can dine with asia staple food, the rice!
"From chicken rice to chilli crab, Singapore food celebrates our rich diversity - a melting pot of colors, textures, tastes and aromas that bind us, regardless of class, race, language or religion."

Situated on the edge of the Financial District, the popular Boat Quay is a vibrant, bustling area with tables spilling out onto the riverside walk. A choice of foods from Indian to sizzling seafood can be enjoyed in this great Mediterranean atmosphere. Nights are lively and as the eating crowds disperse, the bars take over and music fills the air late into the night.

Further down the river is Clarke Quay, which is similar to Boat Quay, although more family-oriented. A range of riverside restaurants and a host of food stalls offering the chance to sample local/Asian delicacies are available. There is an abundance of choice from the relatively cheap to the expensive, from Western to Asian.

East Coast Park has some very popular local seafood restaurants. Meals can prove expensive and it must be said that cheaper options can be found elsewhere in Singapore, however the seaside location does make for a great atmosphere. If you like spicy food then the famed black pepper crab or chilli crab is an absolute must!

But these are just the tip of what one can find in the food paradise. Even though you'll be tempted by the wonderful international food selection, don't leave without trying local favorites that have evolved from Singapore's unique multicultural mix. So to truly sample the local cuisine, head for the hawker centers which offer an authentic range of local food and sample some local favorites.
